Every new beginning

Well, after nearly seven years using Blogger, I've finally purchased my own domain name and set up a new blog with Wordpress. It's definitely the end of an era, but I'm super excited about my new site and I encourage all of you to check it out:

ohonestly.org

This blog will stay public until about September, but in the meantime you can subscribe to my new RSS feed and update your links. Catch you on the flip side...

Hi-8, Us

OH HONESTLY is on a hiatus while I plan and execute a move to a domain (complete with new layout and content). I may post occasionally, but don't count on anything solid until late July. Have a happy summer!

TCA actually stands for Totally Cool and Awesome

((NOTE: A review of the LOST season finale will be up as soon as I re-watch the episode. Stay tuned!))

This is really embarrassing for me to admit, but I'm going to go ahead and say it: I never knew the Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards existed until the nominations for this season were announced today. Pathetic, huh? The rock I was living under must have been huge, I'll say that much.

Anyway, below are the list of nominees, with my thoughts helpfully color-coded in blue.

PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
"John Adams" (HBO)
"Lost" (ABC)
"Friday Night Lights" (NBC)
"Mad Men" (AMC)
"Ken Burns' The War" (PBS)
"The Wire" (HBO)
Well, I've seen all of these and I loved each for different reasons, but LOST had a GREAT year.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY
"30 Rock" (NBC)
"The Colbert Report" (Comedy Central)
"The Daily Show" (Comedy Central)
"Flight of the Conchords" (HBO)
"The Office" (NBC)
Give it to all of 'em.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA
"Damages" (FX)
"Friday Night Lights" (NBC)
"Lost" (ABC)
"Mad Men" (AMC)
"The Wire" (HBO)
LOST - again, for pulling itself out of a slump and kicking ass with a shortened, strike-afflicted season.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT MOVIES, MINI-SERIES AND SPECIALS
"John Adams" (HBO)
"Masterpiece: Cranford" (PBS)
"Masterpiece: Jane Austen Collection" (PBS)
"Ken Burns' The War" (PBS)
"A Raisin in the Sun" (ABC)
I LOVED John Adams, but it was also the only nominee in this category that I saw, so...

OUTSTANDING NEW PROGRAM
"Breaking Bad" (AMC)
"Damages" (FX)
"Flight of the Conchords" (HBO)
"Mad Men" (AMC)
"Pushing Daisies" (ABC)
I love the fact that PD got a nomination, but I would give this one to Mad Men.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY
Christina Applegate ("Samantha Who?")
Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")
Stephen Colbert ("The Colbert Report")
Tina Fey ("30 Rock")
Ray Wise ("Reaper")
Tina Fey does everything for her show...like, single-handedly. While being amazing. Definition of 'achievement' right there.

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DRAMA
Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights")
Glenn Close ("Damages")
Paul Giamatti ("John Adams")
Jon Hamm ("Mad Men")
David Simon ("The Wire")
Paul Giamatti was incredibly badass...but how can you deny Connie Britton anything?

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING
"Curious George" (PBS)
"High School Musical 2" (The Disney Channel)
"Hannah Montana" (Disney Channel)
"Word Girl" (PBS)
"Yo Gabba Gabba" (Nickelodeon)
Hahaha all I can think of when I hear "Yo gabba gabba" is this. HILARIOUS.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN NEWS AND INFORMATION
"Alive Day Memories" (HBO)
"This American Life" (Showtime)
"Frontline" (PBS)
"Nimrod Nation" (Sundance Channel)
"Ken Burns' The War" (PBS)
I am absolutely not qualified to talk about this category, hah.

HERITAGE AWARD
"M*A*S*H" (CBS)
"Roots" (ABC)
"Saturday Night Live" (NBC)
"Sesame Street" (PBS)
"The Wire" (HBO)
The Wire, for reasons every TV critic has discussed into the ground. Epic stuff.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT
James Garner
Lorne Michaels
Bill Moyers
William Shatner
Mike Wallace
William Shatner, because it'd be funny.

Also, Pushing Daisies and Chuck will be released on DVD on September 16th, which is excellent, but I won't be satisfied until a release date for Reaper is announced.

Lots of 'Lost' links

In nail-biting anticipation of the fourth season finale of LOST (airing tomorrow night at 9 p.m. on ABC), here's some best-show-ever link spam:

01. Vulture analyzes why it's the best game show in TV history. Makes my enjoyment of the series somewhat surprising, given my disdain for games of all kinds.

02. Watch with Kristin has six (get it? Oceanic 6?) sneak peeks at the finale, which I refuse to watch because for once, I'd like to remain unspoiled.

03. Also on Watch with Kristin: Fanvid Theatre. My personal favorite is the credits sequence set to Switchfoot's "This Is Your Life".

04. I've posted this one before, but it's just too awesome, and I love me some Popwatch, so: characters agree that LOST is confusing. Like, really confusing.

05. The Sawyer Nickname Generator, courtesy of abc.com. Mine was "Picasso", haha.

06. Because some people (myself included) need things spelled out a little more clearly, a lovely fan has strung the flash-forwards together in chronological order.

07. Jorge Garcia, pre-LOST(obviously), in an actually-kind-of-funny Hardee's commercial. This one made the rounds a while back, but it's still good.

08. USAToday has an awesome story on Kevin Durand, who signed on this season to play the muscle-y, intimidating mercenary, Keamy. Fun fact: Durand is 6'6" and did stand-up in Ontario when he was younger.

09. One of my favorite things about LOST is its amazing score. Check out NPR's 2005 story on the incredibly talented composer, Michael Giacchino, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for his work in Ratatouille. ((I've also decided that he will score the film of my life. Just as an FYI.))

10. Finally, I have to plug myself a little bit. I write a blog called MyTube for a campus publication called Speakeasy Magazine, and I recently completed a five-part series of TV show recommendations. Obviously, I saved the best for last.

ETA 11. Slate just put up an article on why the show is now worthy of all the praise it's received since its debut.

ETA2 12. Cynthia Littleton (of Variety) is probably the only other person on this planet who agrees with my view that the first half of season three wasn't all that bad.
